An Innermost World

Digital Animation with Sound, 1 min 38 sec

"An Innermost World" is a digital animation created using scanned watercolor images.

The artist, who had a keen interest in communication between people, believed that thoughts and emotions are partly lost in the process of being expressed through 'language.' After moving to the United States, she experienced this loss once more due to language barriers. To record the ever-changing flow of thoughts and forms of emotions, even during the act of speaking, the artist referenced Korean '서예' (calligraphy) culture. The core concept is that the shape of the strokes made with a brush reflects the mental state of the person at the moment the stroke is made.

To capture inner thoughts and expressions that cannot be conveyed through words, the artist kept a journal for three months, filling it with watercolor strokes instead of written letters. The scanned strokes were digitally edited and given unique movements and sounds, which are other non-verbal languages.
